In a tearful speech Monday night at the city chambers where he spent nearly 14 years as a council member, Don Chapman announced his resignation and a campaign for state office.
"My decision tonight is a difficult one, because I love Anderson," Chapman said to the crowd.
He represents the northeast part of the city, Ward 2, click here for a map of his ward.
Chapman is a lifelong Anderson resident and he owns and has run an architecture firm, Chapman Design Group, in downtown for nearly 30 years. He also is a co-owner of Icon Construction of SC.
Chapman said his goal is to take the same common sense and business solutions he used in Anderson and apply those to state government in Columbia.
